FAQs

Can I DIY my own paving or patio?

1

While laying pavers might seem straightforward, achieving a flat, long-lasting surface requires professional ground preparation. The biggest mistake in DIY paving is skipping sub-base installation. A paved surface is only as stable as what lies beneath it—without a compacted crushed-aggregate sub-base (GAP20), bedding sand, concrete, and a subtle slope for water drainage. DIY patios quickly sink, trap standing water, and sprout weeds. Professional installation ensures your patio stays level, drains correctly, and holds up against heavy foot traffic for decades.

What decorative gravels do you commonly use?

2

We source a wide variety of local South Island stones to suit both traditional and modern garden themes. Our most common are;

Appleby Rounds

Gold Chip

Salt & Pepper

Limestone Chunk

What options make paving or steps stand out as a main feature?

3

You can turn paving into a feature by using custom concrete finishes, bold shapes, or contrasting textures. Popular options include spacing custom concrete pads or round steppers within grass, artificial grass, surrounded by ground cover or decorative stone, opting for cantilevered "floating" slabs, or building steps with Macrocarpa timber risers filled with custom stone or exposed aggregate treads..

What types of bark and mulch do you use in Nelson/Tasman garden beds?

4

We source quality local barks and mulches that retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and complete the look of your paved or gravel borders:

  • Natural Brown Bark: A rich, classic brown pine bark chip. It provides an organic, natural aesthetic that complements timber decks, natural stone, and native plantings while decomposing slowly over time to nourish the soil.

  • Black Mulch / Black Bark: A dyed, high-contrast dark bark that creates a sleek, contemporary backdrop. The deep black colour makes bright green foliage, silver tussocks, and light-coloured stone paving pop with visual impact.
